Complete Guide to Pals: A Medieval Village on the Costa Brava

Back to journal

Pals is best discovered on foot. The old village perches on a hillside overlooking the Baix Empordà plain, nestled between the Montgrí massif and the Mediterranean Sea. You enter through the Torre de les Hores, a remnant of the 12th-century walls, and leave wanting to come back. If you stay at Aparthotel Arenal, you are two minutes on foot from the heart of the village and five minutes by car from the beach.

This guide brings together everything you need to plan your trip to Pals: the history of the village, rice fields and beaches, when to visit, how to get there, itineraries by trip length, gastronomy, and the questions most travellers ask.

Why visit Pals

Pals is listed among the most beautiful villages in Catalonia, and its historic centre is protected as a cultural asset of national interest. While other coastal villages along the Costa Brava urbanised rapidly, Pals kept its medieval identity thanks to a meticulous restoration that started in the 1950s. The result is a coherent architectural ensemble that has earned the village several international distinctions.

Beyond the village itself, Pals offers three major assets: a fine-sand beach more than three kilometres long, rice fields unique in Catalonia, and an exceptional density of quality restaurants. That combination makes Pals one of the most complete bases on the Costa Brava for a trip blending culture, beach and gastronomy.

The medieval village

The historic centre of Pals was restored stone by stone from the 1950s onward under the impetus of Dr. Pi Figueras. The result is striking: narrow streets of dressed stone, Gothic arches, houses with sun-golden facades. The plaça Major hosts a market on Tuesday mornings from June to September, where you will find vegetables, cheese, honey and seasonal fruit from the Empordà.

The Josep Pla viewpoint, named after the Catalan writer born in the region, offers a 360-degree view over the rice fields, the Medes Islands and the Montgrí. Sunset is the best time to climb up, when the oblique light brings out the folds of the plain and the glints of the sea.

Not to miss in the village. The Sant Pere church, originally Romanesque and rebuilt in Gothic style, houses a historic organ. The Torre de les Hores, marking the entrance to the old town, is an unmistakable landmark. The Carrer Major and its side alleys concentrate most of the medieval architecture. The ramparts offer several viewpoints over the rice fields and the sea.

The rice fields of Pals

The Empordà is one of the few rice-growing areas in Catalonia. The rice fields of Pals stretch between the village and the sea, creating a unique landscape that changes colour with the seasons. In spring, flooded paddies mirror the sky. In summer, the deep green of the rice contrasts with the Mediterranean blue. In autumn, the colour turns golden yellow before the harvest.

Pals rice has held a Protected Geographical Indication since 1997 and features in the menus of every quality restaurant in the region, especially in arròs a la cassola, the emblematic dish of the Empordà. Our Empordà gastronomy guide dives deeper into the products, markets and addresses worth discovering.

Platja de Pals and nearby beaches

Platja de Pals stretches more than three kilometres of fine sand, bordered by dunes and pine groves. Less crowded than the southern Costa Brava beaches, it keeps a natural character that makes its charm. The dunes shelter protected flora and several hiking trails run along the coastline. A Blue Flag flies here every year, a sign of water quality and facilities.

A short drive away, the cove of Sa Riera offers a more intimate alternative, with rocky inlets and crystal-clear waters. Further north, L'Estartit is the departure point for trips to the Medes Islands, a protected marine reserve renowned for its biodiversity. For a full overview, see our guide to the best beaches on the Costa Brava.

The surrounding natural areas, including the nature parks of Catalonia, offer great opportunities for hiking, diving, kayaking and wildlife watching.

Things to do around Pals

Pals and its surroundings offer activities for every taste. Golf fans will love Pals Golf, just three minutes by car from Aparthotel Arenal, and Golf d'Empordà is also nearby. Both courses are among the most reputed in Catalonia, and you can read more in our golf feature article.

Hiking and cycling trails are abundant. The Vies Verdes del Baix Empordà greenways pass a few minutes from Pals and let you ride to Girona on a gravel bike or explore neighbouring villages as a family. The sea offers kayaking, paddle-boarding, snorkelling and kitesurfing depending on the season and wind.

In summer, evenings at the Arenal regularly host cultural and musical events. Check our events agenda for upcoming dates.

When to visit Pals

The Empordà climate lets you enjoy Pals year-round, and each season has its own appeal.

April to June. Temperatures are mild (18 to 25 degrees Celsius), the rice fields come back to life, prices are still low and restaurants are not packed. It is the best time to discover the village without the crowds and enjoy nature waking up.

July and August. High beach season. It is hot (28 to 32 degrees), beaches fill up and rates climb. The atmosphere is lively, terraces are busy and events multiply. A good fit for families on school holidays.

September and October. The best time for a mixed beach and discovery trip. The sea stays around 22 degrees until mid-October, the light turns golden, harvests animate the DO Empordà wineries, and crowds have thinned out. Ideal for couples.

November to March. Low season has its own charm: clear skies, quiet villages, gentle rates. Many restaurants stay open and fireplace evenings set the tone. It is also the best window for a workation or long-stay trip.
